Barancos Panama Hat

Cuenca Llano Panama Hat by Barranco (Box not included)

This is a genuine, traditional Panama Hat sourced from one of the world's top brand Panama makers, Barranco, in Cuenca, Ecuador, the original home of the Panama Hat.
This hat is white with a traditional black band. It has a 5-7cm brim (varies as each hat is unique due to hand made nature).
A fair trade price was paid in person at the workshop. Barranco ensures that the weavers from the outlying villages near Cuenca, from whom they purchase the unfinished hats, were paid a good price for their work, a price set by the weavers themselves.

Barranco was established in 1942, on the banksof the Rio Tomebamba, in the beautiful colonial city of Cuenca, Ecuador, and are considered one of Ecuador's finest hat makers, dedicated to making highest quality products.
Originally the factory exported Panama hats north from Cuenca, Ecuador to Panama City by horseback. Panama hats were taken to Panama City because it was a prime export hub in the early years of the Panama hat industry. The trailwas tough and would take many weeks using horses to transport the hats from the workshopin Cuenca. From the 1960s, until recently, the workshop would export unfinished panama hats directly to English merchants who would finish them in england. However in the 1990s, the Ecuadorian workshop imported the necessary equipment from Brazil to finish the hats themselves.

This natural, handmade treasure is handwoven from Toquilla straw. Despite its name, the Panama hat belongs to Ecuador. Its name became known during construction of the Panama Canal where workers wore them to protect against the sun. The native Toquilla straw has been grown in the Ecuadorian wild for centuries.

expert workmanship in Ecuador maintaining the traditions - the finished articles
The Panama Hat contains the tradition of the Ecuadorian weavers. The manual skill and natural nobility of the Toquilla straw contributes to this company's ISO 9001-2000 Quality Certification for the design, production and export of hats and straw articles.
Can I roll my Panama Hat? Yes, you can - the flexibility of the fibre allows rolling without damaging the material, however, please note that there is a special technique to roll, and as with all clothing,it will be left with a fold which will alter its shape from optimum. (this is the case with all Panama hats, so be careful of gimmicks). You can iron your hat to return its shape, but we recommend you don't transport your hat in a small box, as per the advice of a number of expert hat makers in Ecuador.
In order to preserve the hat in its optimum shape, we chose to send our hats out to our customers in a sturdy large hat box, designed to protect it fully during shipment. We post our hats in cardboard boxes unrolled. Other sellers might send their rolled which can mean they will arrive mis-shapen. Hats should be rolled for as little time as possible to preserve your hat and ensure it lasts.Hat Sizing Scales

Hats size is usually generally measured in one of three different sizing scales; British, North American or European/Metric.

British hat sizes are given in an imperial measurement of the diameter of the head in inches. Sizes usually range from 6 1/2 to 8. North American hats use the imperial scale however measurements are an eighth of an inch larger than British hats

for the same size hat. European hat sizes use the metric sizing standard which is a measure of head circumference given in centimeters. Metric sizes usually range from 52 - 64.

British (inch) U.S. (inch) European (cm)
6 5/8 6 3/4 54(S)
6 3/4 6 7/8 55(S)
6 7/8 7 56 (M)
7 7 1/8 57(M)
7 1/8 7 1/4 58(L)
7 1/4 7 3/8 59(L)
7 3/8 7 1/2 60(XL)
7 1/2 7 5/8 61(XL)
7 5/8 8 3/4 62(XXL)
7 3/4 7 7/8 63(XXL)
7 7/8 8 64(XXXL)

Calculating Your Own Hat Size.

To calculate your metric (European) hat size a measurement of the head circumference should be taken in centimeters. This is best achieved by passing a cloth tape measure around the head. Alternatively a piece of string may be used and measured against a ruler or tape measure. It is important that this measurement is taken where a hat would normally rest. To take a measurement position the tape measure or string so that it rests just above the brow at the front of the head, touching the top of the ears at the side. Pull the tape so that is taut but not too tight and take a measurement.

Hats are sized to the nearest whole centimeter so it is advisable to size up if your head falls between two measurements.

The way a hat is worn is obviously dependent upon personal taste so this suggestion is only offered as a guide. If you already own a Panama hat then you can measure around the inside of the hat at the point where the crown meets the brim.
